What are cookies and similar technologies?

Cookies, pixels, tags and similar technologies (which we will call “cookies”) are files containing small amounts of information which are downloaded to any internet enabled device- such as your computer, smartphone or tablet when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the originating website on each subsequent visit, or to another website that recognises that cookie. Cookies do lots of different and useful jobs, such as remembering your preferences, generally improving your online experience, and helping us to offer you the best product and services.

There are many types of cookies. They all work in the same way but have minor differences. For a detailed list of cookies used on our websites, please refer to the section below.

What purpose do we use cookies for?

We use cookies to make Paula’s Choice websites easier to use, to deliver a personalised experience on our websites, and to better tailor our products, services and websites to your interests and needs. Cookies are used to help speed up your future activities and your experience on Paula’s Choice websites.

The cookies you consent to, are also used to collect your personal data which we then profile into audiences so that we can deliver targeted advertising tailored to your interests and limit the number of times you see an advertisement. For more detailed information about the profiling activities Paula’s Choice undertakes with your personal data for advertising, please see our privacy statement. We also insert cookies in emails and newsletters to improve our content and advertising.

Lastly, we use cookies to compile anonymous, aggregated statistics that allow us to understand how people use our websites and to help us improve their structure and content and also help us measure the effectiveness of advertising campaigns on Paula’s Choice and non-Paula’s Choice Group websites.

More detailed information about the types of cookies we use and for what purposes, can be found in the below relevant section.

What cookies do we use?

A cookie is a small piece of data (text file) that a website – when visited by a user – asks your browser to store on your device in order to remember information about you, such as your language preference or login information. Those cookies are set by us and called first-party cookies. We also use third-party cookies – which are cookies from a domain different than the domain of the website you are visiting – for our advertising and marketing efforts. More specifically, we use cookies and other tracking technologies for the following purposes:

Strictly Necessary Cookies

These cookies are necessary for the website to function and cannot be switched off in our systems. They are usually only set in response to actions made by you which amount to a request for services, such as setting your privacy preferences, logging in or filling in forms. You can set your browser to block or alert you about these cookies, but some parts of the site will not then work.

Performance Cookies

These cookies allow us to count visits and traffic sources so we can measure and improve the performance of our site. They help us to know which pages are the most and least popular and see how visitors move around the site. All information these cookies collect is aggregated and therefore anonymous. If you do not allow these cookies we will not know when you have visited our site, and will not be able to monitor its performance.

Functional Cookies

These cookies enable the website to provide enhanced functionality and personalisation. They may be set by us or by third party providers whose services we have added to our pages. If you do not allow these cookies then some or all of these services may not function properly.

Targeting Cookies

These cookies (also known as advertising cookies or social media cookies) may be set through our site or digital service by us or our third-party advertising partners (including social media platforms). They may be used by those companies to build a profile of your interests and show you relevant adverts on other sites. They do this by uniquely identifying your browser and internet device. If you do not allow these cookies, you will experience less targeted advertising.

Duration of the cookie we use

In terms of duration, we may use two different types of cookies on our websites:

  • Session Cookies. These cookies are temporary cookies that remain on your device until you leave our websites; or
  • Persistent Cookies. These cookies remain on your device for much longer or until you manually delete them (how long the cookie remains on your device will depend on the duration or “lifetime” of the specific cookie, as well as your browser settings, as stated above).
